Marilyn Manson Releases Ominous Video For New Cover "God's Gonna Cut You Down"

Much like Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson has recorded a multitude of obscure covers throughout his career, taking classic songs and tossing his own unique flair in the mix. And although, I prefer Type O's covers a hell of a lot more than Manson's, there's no denying that the shock rock icon can take someone else's song and make it his own. I mean, his cover of Eurythmics’ "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" practically put him on the mainstream map.

Today, Manson adds another notch in his cover belt with the surprise release of the traditional folk song, "God's Gonna Cut You Down," which has been recorded by various legends over the years, including Elvis Presley, Bobbie Gentry, Odetta, and of course, Johnny Cash.

Dead Animal Assembly Plant also released a pretty stellar cover of the song back in 2017. I'll post that below, just for shits and giggles.

The new video for his rendition of the song features all sorts of religious imagery, a gothic Americana vibe, and is shot beautifully in the desert.

Rolling Stone, who debuted the video, notes that "music video director Tim Mattia (Halsey’s "Colors," the 1975’s "Somebody Else," Manson’s "Hey Cruel World … ") shot Manson for the video in the Joshua Tree Desert in California."

"Manson cut the song with producer Tyler Bates, with whom he has collaborated on his last two records, 2015’s The Pale Emperor and 2017’s Heaven Upside Down. The singer is putting the song out as a standalone vinyl single (and digital release) to coincide with his October and November tour dates. The vinyl picture disc features one of his watercolor paintings."

Watch "God’s Gonna Cut You Down" below. A special vinyl picture disc featuring the single is also up for grabs.

Manson also recently teased his next album, which is due to release in 2020.
