Depending on who you ask, there’s another wrestling war going on on Wednesday nights, between AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT, with both shows in the 8-10pm EST time slot on their respective networks. If you ask me, having around 1.5 million people watching wrestling on a work or school night is awesome to see, especially when both products are usually pretty great.
NXT is looking to strike hard on their first televised show of the new year, as they have dubbed the January 6th, 2021 episode New Year’s Evil, another TakeOver-level episode of the show with the expected quality of match-ups to boot. In the fallout from the wild and chaotic TakeOver: WarGames earlier this month, several matches have been slated for New Year’s Evil, and the silent artist Dexter Lumis has been named as the host of the event. While we shouldn’t anticipate the outfit changes that Shotzi Blackheart had during her hosting gig for Halloween Havoc (review), we can expect the Tortured Artist to bring a cold, uncanny edge to this show, as well as some sweet artwork to boot.
There have been two matches announced for the show, with the recently returned Karrion Kross facing Damien Priest, following Kross’ savage attack on the Archer of Infamy on the first show after TakeOver: WarGames. This will be Kross’ first major match-up since his return, following a separated shoulder during his NXT Championship victory against Keith Lee, an injury which forced him to vacate the title.
That title vacation paved the way for Finn Balor to win his second NXT Championship, after the Super Tuesday two-fer of a Fatal Four Way Iron Man Match, followed by a sudden death match between Balor and fellow former champion Adam Cole (bay bay!). Balor will defend his crown against Kyle O’Reilly of The Undisputed Era, following KOR’s win against Pete Dunne in a number one contender’s match on last week’s episode of NXT.
NXT New Year’s Evil will air live from the Capitol Wrestling Center on the USA Network on January 6th, 2021, beginning at 8pm EST. The show will be available twenty-four hours after airing on the WWE Network for paid subscribers.
