This is easily the biggest news of 2019, thus far! Sony has hired Jason Reitman, son of Ghostbusters 1 and 2 director Ivan Reitman, to write and co-direct the next installment in the Ghostbusters franchise! The new film will be a continuation of the 1989 sequel and will have no connection to Paul Feig's 2016 film.
Reitman told EW, “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
Variety reports that Reitman has co-written a screenplay with Gil Kenan (director of Poltergeist and Monster House) with plans to begin shooting the film this summer. Sony expects to release the latest sequel in summer 2020.
Plot details are currently being kept under wraps and sources haven't revealed if the remaining original cast members will make an appearance, though we imagine they will.
Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Pictures is producing the film.
