Loved by few, hated by many, and tolerated by all the rest, Kevin Reynolds 1995 adventure film Waterworld attempted to produce a box office success story by bringing Mad Max to the high seas, ultimately failing miserably. In recent years, however, the Kevin Costner starring spectacle eventually garnered profits and a cult fanbase following its home video release, and all these years later, it's getting a brand new 4K release.
Universal Pictures will release Waterworld on 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital) on July 9th.
The release includes both the theatrical version (in 4K with High Dynamic Range) and the extended version (in HD).
Set in the future when Earth is completely covered in water and the human race is struggling to survive, mankind’s one remaining hope for a better future is a drifter (Kevin Costner) who gets caught up in a battle between the evil Deacon (Dennis Hopper) and a child’s secret key to a wondrous place called “Dryland.”
Prior to Titanic, Waterworld was the most expensive movie ever produced at $175 million. Kevin Costner personally invested $22 million of his own money into the film!
