Jordan Peele Calls Ari Aster's 'Midsommar' Atrociously Disturbing

June 6, 2019

We absolutely cannot wait to see Ari Aster's Midsommar, which is being released by A24 on July 3rd, and if last year's Hereditary was any indication, Aster's follow-up feature is sure to be one of the most talked about films of the year!

In the latest issue of Fangoria, Aster and Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) talk Midsommar, and EW provides us with a bit of a sneak peek today. They give us a look at the issue's cover art, featuring the film front and center, and share some quotes from inside the pages.

"There are some obvious comps out there, but this movie is just so unique," Peele says to Aster during the Fangoria interview. "This hasn’t existed yet, and anything after Midsommar is going to have to contend with it. I mean, this usurps The Wicker Man as the most iconic pagan movie to be referenced."

Peele continues, "It plays a weird sleight of hand, where it transcends the horror of itself. It is an ascension of horror. I didn’t feel victimized; I felt like I was being put up on this pedestal and honored through the eyes of the protagonist. It’s a very unique feeling for a film to conjure because after it ended, I found myself looking back at the final act like, ‘Holy shit.’ That was some of the most atrociously disturbing imagery I’ve ever seen on film, and yet I experienced it with this open-mouthed, wild-eyed gape."

Midsommar stars Jack Reynor, Will Poulter and Florence Pugh with Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia and Archie Madekwe.

“Pugh and Reynor will play a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.”
